Research Projects

I am currently working on two major research projects:

1. Skin Jobs: biopolitics, embodiment and haptic technologies (2006-2008)
The aim of this project is: to develop a way of understanding touch as a meaning system, which can be used to develop and enhance haptic technologies So far this project has produced seven academic publications, three conference and seminar papers, and I am currently working on a Special Journal Issue about ‘Wearable Technology’ and an Exhibition on ‘Touch’ to be held at the Macquarie University Gallery in 2009.

2. Cultural Auracy: developing a methodology for the analysis of sonic texts and their cultural meanings (2007-2009)
The aim of this project is: to develop a coherent method for understanding and analysing the meanings of sound (including ambient/environmental sound, voice (quality, accent), sound effects and music) as a cultural practice, which can be used by students and by professionals in a range of fields to understand the ways in which sound creates meanings. So far this project has produced one journal article, with another under consideration. I also have a performance in preparation, that will accompany the ‘Touch’ exhibition (above).

For more details on these projects, see my attached c.v.
